Does it take THAT long to become an official Liberal Party card-carrying member?

I think my membership probably expired a month or two ago, I don’t know. I got a receipt when I first joined, never did get any kind of membership card.

I applied for my Memebership back in July and received email that I was a member, but I wanted my card. I sent them a note about the card, but still do not have it.

I have been a member of the Liberal Party for two years now. For each year, I managed to get a membership card (don’t me ask me how :em21: ).

I figured that I had to renew again for 2007 to get a card that has “2007″ printed across it. I have sent them e-mail, because the website only allows you to buy a membership, but there is no option that says RENEW.

I have heard from many people that membership management has always been a major mess in the Liberal Party. Now that corporate donations are out, it’ll be crucial for the party to rectify this problem, which affects primarily grassroots members, on whose donations the party must now depend.

All I can say is that CPC is much better organized in this respect. They’ll hunt their members down, like a collection agency, making sure that they renew their membership.

I joined about the same time as you — I got my card weeks ago. But don’t feel too bad, it’s not all that impressive …

Okay, here we go. It’s a long-winded answer…and not a good one at that.

No member in Ontario received a membership card in 2006. Period. They asked ridings if they wanted them to still be issued, but it wasn’t until the last week of November, therby defeating the purpose of sending them as most would expire on December 31, 2006.

Had you joined after November 1, 2006, you would be a member until the end of 2007 automatically.

2007 membership cards will be issued, but probably not until after March 2007 as you have until that day to “renew” your 2005 membership without “lapsing”.

Should you want to renew online, you would rejoin and pay the fee. The update will be read at LPCO and you will be marked as a “renewed” member instead of a “new” member, thereby granting you the authority to still vote in your riding for AGMS, Nominations, etc.

Anyway, not that I know much. That’s just my take.

I think people are focusing too much on the “Card-carrying member” part of my post. I’m just saying that I was told in the email that I would get paperwork in the mail to confirm my electronic correspondence in hardcopy.. and it’s coming up to a month now since they sent this in email without any trace of promised papers/documents in the mail.

Whether that includes a “card” or not isnt particularly the point of the post.

Of course, the national Liberal Registry is supposed to have the capacity to generate the donation receipts along with taking care of the membership stuff. It’s currnetly not working to its full capacity yet.

No, that’s not what I said: I said they acted LIKE a collection agency in pursuing their members to renew and/or donate.

AS soon as you recieved you e-mail receipt you were a member Scott with al its rights and priveledges. All you have to do is show up at meetings with your receipt. Contact your riding assn President so s/he can make sure they recieved your fee and have you on their list, but you are a member. The cards have to be changed because they are signed by the leader, now Stephane Dion. Mine says Paul Martin eventhough he wasn’t leader at the time and took a couple of months at least to come in the mail. Like I said you ARE a member. We have gone to using ID at meetings instead of presenting cards anyways for membership concerns. You’ll get it especially if you are in contact with your riding assn. They still do some of the paperwork, but my be is on April.

To Werner: I stand corrected, of course. Like many of the other people here who’ve posted, though, it’s just perplexing it’s taking so long.
