I think my membership probably expired a month or two ago, I don’t know. I got a receipt when I first joined, never did get any kind of membership card.

For what it’s worth I filled out the forms and entered my credit card information and was never charged or added to the party.

I applied for my Memebership back in July and received email that I was a member, but I wanted my card. I sent them a note about the card, but still do not have it.

I never got a card when I signed up, even though they said the’d send me one. I’m supposed to renew mine this or next month, apparently there’s a form that I’ll be sent (or am supposed to be sent) with a letter telling me to renew the membership though I’m betting that like the card I’m not going to get it.

530. Werner Patels said on January 8, 2007 at 11:10 pm

I have been a member of the Liberal Party for two years now. For each year, I managed to get a membership card (don’t me ask me how :em21: ).

I figured that I had to renew again for 2007 to get a card that has “2007″ printed across it. I have sent them e-mail, because the website only allows you to buy a membership, but there is no option that says RENEW.

I have heard from many people that membership management has always been a major mess in the Liberal Party. Now that corporate donations are out, it’ll be crucial for the party to rectify this problem, which affects primarily grassroots members, on whose donations the party must now depend.

All I can say is that CPC is much better organized in this respect. They’ll hunt their members down, like a collection agency, making sure that they renew their membership.

Many people have stories of never receiving their cards. If you get it at all, I’d consider it a bonus for yourself.

I joined about the same time as you — I got my card weeks ago. But don’t feel too bad, it’s not all that impressive …

I joined back in June 2006 and I have not received a membership card.

535. james curran said on January 9, 2007 at 2:28 am

Okay, here we go. It’s a long-winded answer…and not a good one at that.

No member in Ontario received a membership card in 2006. Period. They asked ridings if they wanted them to still be issued, but it wasn’t until the last week of November, therby defeating the purpose of sending them as most would expire on December 31, 2006.

Had you joined after November 1, 2006, you would be a member until the end of 2007 automatically.

2007 membership cards will be issued, but probably not until after March 2007 as you have until that day to “renew” your 2005 membership without “lapsing”.

Should you want to renew online, you would rejoin and pay the fee. The update will be read at LPCO and you will be marked as a “renewed” member instead of a “new” member, thereby granting you the authority to still vote in your riding for AGMS, Nominations, etc.

Anyway, not that I know much. That’s just my take.

The What Do I Know Grit.

That should read to renew your “2006″ membership on March 31, 2007, and not 2005. Oops.

I think people are focusing too much on the “Card-carrying member” part of my post. I’m just saying that I was told in the email that I would get paperwork in the mail to confirm my electronic correspondence in hardcopy.. and it’s coming up to a month now since they sent this in email without any trace of promised papers/documents in the mail.

Whether that includes a “card” or not isnt particularly the point of the post.

I took out a membership in late June, just to make sure I could vote in the delegate selection. I only got an e-mail confirmation but I knew I was on the rolls because I started getting e-mails from all the leadership campaigns. On the day of the delegate selection in my district (Hamilton Mountain), I asked around and more than a few said they had applied as early as the beginning of the year and they still hadn’t received a card.

And I made an end-of year donation too … it’s been over a month now. My credit card was charged, but no receipt yet and I need it to get my tax rebate. Werner mentioned above how the CPC uses collection agencies. I don’t know if the LPC has gone that route yet, but the call centre that solicited my donation begged me for a much larger amount than I ultimately made, saying the Cons have raised three times as much money. My thought on that is, clean up the in-house mess and you’ll get the amount you’re asking for.

Of course, the national Liberal Registry is supposed to have the capacity to generate the donation receipts along with taking care of the membership stuff. It’s currnetly not working to its full capacity yet.

Not that this is even close to a worthy excuse, but the membership process within the Liberal Party is administered by the Provincial and Territorial Associations. Some PTAs are very good at managing the program and others….. Over the next couple of years the administration of the membership program will transition to the head office. Hopefully a centralized membership services structure will improve overall efficiency.

No, that’s not what I said: I said they acted LIKE a collection agency in pursuing their members to renew and/or donate.

I got my card promptly, through the auspices of the Provincial-Federal NSLP; I suspect the particular process varies by province.

It might seem trivial, but tbh I would appreciate a party organized enough to do this sort of thing promptly, or get rid of paper cards altogether, since the card has little function these days.

What concerned me more was that I was never contacted to volunteer for the 2006 Federal Election; I could not have, as it happened, but I was still on the relevant sign-up sheets and never got a phone call.

AS soon as you recieved you e-mail receipt you were a member Scott with al its rights and priveledges. All you have to do is show up at meetings with your receipt. Contact your riding assn President so s/he can make sure they recieved your fee and have you on their list, but you are a member. The cards have to be changed because they are signed by the leader, now Stephane Dion. Mine says Paul Martin eventhough he wasn’t leader at the time and took a couple of months at least to come in the mail. Like I said you ARE a member. We have gone to using ID at meetings instead of presenting cards anyways for membership concerns. You’ll get it especially if you are in contact with your riding assn. They still do some of the paperwork, but my be is on April.

Thanks for the info, James, it’s good to know I can renew on-line as I was wondering about that. You’ve actually been able to provide me with more information on the issue then anyone in my riding association, so clearly next time I have a question that needs answering I should ask it on the blogs :em23:

To Werner: I stand corrected, of course. Like many of the other people here who’ve posted, though, it’s just perplexing it’s taking so long.
