A nice piece of news on a rather disappointing Budget Day - disappointing for both what was in it (and what was not) and the fact the Nervous Nellies in the Liberal caucus have won the day on not causing an election.
The Federal Court of Appeal has upheld the ruling that said the Conservative government exceeded their power when it tried to strip the Canadian Wheat Board of its barley monopoly unilaterally. If it wants to do that, it must pass a law in Parliament that makes that change. Apparently, Ag. Minister Gerry Ritz is promising to do just that, but no opposition party supports that change.
I suppose they could declare the bill a confidence motion, though that would seem pretty ridiculous over the fate of the Wheat Board. Then again, considering how many Nervous Nellies we have in the Liberal caucus right now, I wouldn’t blame the Cons. for trying that stunt.
If the Cons. DO try that stunt, the Liberals had better not back down on that - it’s publicly known the Liberals have opposed that change to the Wheat Board, and quite publicly. If the Capitulation Caucus/Nervous Nellies run away on this and betray the farmers, I might find it prudent not to renew my Liberal Party membership, till I see some of these folks develop spines and get some principles, and something else other then worrying about if they’ll win the election or get re-elected or not.

Not only do I agree with the court’s decision, I have to agree with you as well. If the Reform party makes this a confidence vote, and the Liberals abstain, then I will lose all respect for the LPC. At some point, it has to stop being about the polls and start being about common sense and what you believe in. For now, congratulations to the CWB. With what they’ve had to endure from Harper and his minions, they’ve shown that they are intelligent, level headed and probably the best thing farmers could have when it comes to standing up to Government, CN Rail, American trade challenges and extreme right wing ideology. Cheers.
