Naturally it would be NATO forces that would be involved, which is why I doubt he made these comments without US-backing. And I suspect no one is really contemplating invasion, but rather raising the rhetoric to get the Pakistanis to take the border issue seriously.

And as Jason indicated, it's not as simple as you'd like Scott. It's going to be impossible to gain normal security in Afghanistan as long as Taliban insurgents can use safe havens in Pakistan where we can't touch them, and the Pakistan Army can't be bothered to touch them.

Karzai is raising a very valid issue.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('15445','BCer in Toronto','Naturally it would be NATO forces that would be involved, which is why I doubt he made these comments without US-backing.
I don't disagree that the Afghan government needs to clean up their own situation. But surely if insurgents are running to and fro across the border at will, dealing with that (somehow - it won't be easy) *is* an essential part of getting their house in order, no?
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('15436','Jason Hickman','I don\'t disagree that the Afghan government needs to clean up their own situation.
